Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on April 22. It is a day of celebration, awareness, and action and marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. In the 52 years since, though the climate crisis has worsened, environmentally sustainable efforts have proven efficient in the long run. This Earth Day 2022, take the time to educate yourself on the history of Earth Day, what it stands for and how you can make a difference every day.

Although it’s only one day out of the year, if everyone makes an effort to do something positive for the planet on Earth Day, it can make a big difference. Here are a few things you can do to do your part this Earth Day – and every day:

1.  Learn about the history of Earth Day:

It has been 52 years since the first national Earth Day. This holiday was created in response to rising air and water pollution and spoke to the thousands of American citizens who were fresh off the anti-war sentiment. To raise awareness of environmental issues, Earth Day was born and encouraged people to take action to protect our planet. You can read more on the history of Earth Day here.

2. Educate yourself on current environmental issues:

Environmental issues are everywhere. From water pollution, fracking, deforestation, algae bloom to air pollution and rising sea levels, there are many current environmental issues currently plaguing our planet. Take the time to Google and research what moves you – and how you can help!

3. Take Action:

Most people know that Earth day is a time to appreciate our planet and learn about ways to take care of it, but did you know that one of the best ways to help on earth day (and every day!) is something as simple as picking up litter in your neighborhood? You can start by taking a walk around your neighborhood and picking up any trash you see. Make sure to wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from the garbage. Once you have collected all the litter, dispose of it properly in the appropriate bins. Not only will this help keep your community clean, but it will also make a positive impact on the environment. Or connect with local organizations to get involved in your community. Find Earth Day celebrations – both in person or online – and attend! Consider small acts such as recycling more, using less water, and using energy-saving light bulbs. You can even do something as small as planting a tree or garden in your backyard. Every little act amounts to a big change.

There are many ways to get involved in Earth Day activities this year. You can participate in a local event, start your green initiative or simply spread the word to friends and family about the importance of taking care of our planet. Whatever you do, NOW is the time to educate and act. No matter how you choose to celebrate and do your part, remember that every action makes a real difference. After all, when people are encouraged to do something good for the environment, good things happen. And we make our home planet just a little bit greener for future generations.
